Japan sold a record 52.3 million mobile phones last year and technology is to blame. The previous record of 48.7 million was recorded in 2003 which was the year cameras started appearing on the phones.
If you have friends in Japan the chances are you have been very impressed with the mobile technology there. Last year saw an incredible leap with features added to these phones. Things you might expect to see on a Japanese mobile phone these days? Well just to start you can expect TV, Media player, Electronic Credit transactions & motion sensor games. Things that my phone can do from that list? None, well maybe a media player but hardly anything to brag about.
Sharp was the market leader last year with a quarter of all mobile phone sales which is considered a large lead. My phone is a sharp, but it’s a very low featured model. It does the job I require which is sending emails and answering phone calls. Next year I will update it to something feature packed.
NTT DoCoMo has had a very aggressive advertising campaign last year with many popular adverts shown on TV stations featuring well know celebrities in Japan. Many of these TV ad’s can be found on youtube for those interested.
